UNWTO Launches an Online Platform to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals Through Tourism

Promoting a greater engagement of the tourism sector with sustainable development is the main objective of the Tourism for SDGs Platform. The online tool is designed to advance the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through tourism, and was developed by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) with the support of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Tourism can make a strong contribution to the economies of Least Developed Countries where the sector is a major exporter concludes the report ‘Tourism for Sustainable Development in Least Developed Countries’ launched on the occasion of the Aid for Trade Review held in Geneva. The report was produced by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF).



United Nations General Assembly Acknowledges Role of Tourism for Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted by consensus at its 65th session three separate resolutions emphasizing the role on tourism in sustainable development. The three resolutions, on the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, on the promotion of ecotourism and on the importance of sustainable tourism for Small Island Developing States stress the significance of the sector to the development agenda in terms of sustainability, employment and poverty elimination. The resolutions further welcomed the efforts and work of UNWTO in promoting sustainable tourism for poverty eradication.



Tourism Can Help Meet Biodiversity Targets, UNWTO Tells UN Biodiversity Summit

UNWTO has called on delegates attending the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10 in Nagoya, Japan, to recognize tourism’s role in safeguarding biodiversity as they shape and agree on a global strategy to save the world’s ecosystems. As part of the decisions adopted by the Parties, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will continue collaboration with UNWTO, including a review of the implementation of the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development.
