Third Runway Critical To Hong Kong's Future Success

The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) today reiterated its support for the construction of a third runway at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to meet future passenger and air cargo demand and support Hong Kong's ongoing economic and social development.

Asia Pacific Airlines Association Mr. Andrew Herdman, AAPA Director General said, “Aviation has indisputably played a crucial role in Hong Kong's successful development as a major tourism destination, and a leading international centre for business and professional services, trading and transport logistics.” 

Mr. Herdman went on to say, “As living standards in the Asia Pacific region continue to rise, it is very clear that demand for air travel will continue to grow. Hong Kong needs a third runway in order to remain competitive as a major aviation hub, and take advantage of such future growth opportunities. Air transport exists to serve the local community, and fully recognises the need to take into account environmental and social considerations when building the required new infrastructure. These are important concerns that need to be addressed and resolved.” 

Mr. Herdman concluded, “We therefore very much welcome the efforts made by the Airport Authority of Hong Kong in reaching out to the wider community in its consultation process, and its constructive engagement with various stakeholders in carrying out a comprehensive environmental impact assessment. We look forward to reviewing its recommendations and are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the associated environmental impacts are effectively mitigated.”

The AAPA is the trade association for scheduled international airlines based in the Asia-Pacific region. The AAPA permanent secretariat is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with international representation in Brussels and Washington, D.C. Collectively, the region’s airlines carry 948 million passengers and 18 million tonnes of cargo, representing one-third of global passenger traffic and twofifths of global air cargo traffic respectively, and thus play a critically important role in the ongoing development of global aviation.
