The board appointed Henry L. Meyer III, United's lead independent director, to serve as non-executive chairman of the board of directors. The company also announced that Jeff Smisek has stepped down from his roles as chairman, president and chief executive officer, and as a director. These changes are effective immediately.
At a meeting today, the Board of Directors of (NYSE: LUV) appointed Dr. Thomas W. Gilligan as a member of the Board. Dr. Gilligan currently serves as the Tad and Dianne Taube Director of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University, a position he has held since Sept. 2015.
This role, reporting to Sabre President and CEO Tom Klein, reinforces Sabre's commitment to better support travel businesses in China as well as to expand Sabre's technology solutions to travel buyers and sellers on the African continent.
Previously, Newton served as Alaska's managing director of systems operations control. He has also held positions including managing director of airport operations, covering all airports outside of Seattle, and director of station operations (Seattle).
