EU airports registered a welcome increase averaging +4.1% - with almost all national markets reporting healthy growth, including in those countries most affected by the recent Sovereign debt and economic crises. At non-EU airports, passenger traffic grew by +9.6%, with Iceland, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova and Israel growing well above this average. Aircraft movements for the whole of Europe reported an increase of +2.5%, reflecting a moderate yet uneven increase in airline capacity being put into the market.
Meanwhile, freight traffic also posted positive growth at +3.1%.
Airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2), airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) and airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year (Group 4) reported an average adjustment of +4.5%, +6.6%, +5.3% and +5.1% respectively when compared with February 2013.
Airports that experienced the highest increases in passenger traffic per group, when comparing February 2014 with February 2013 were:
GROUP 1 Airports - Moscow SVO (+11.5%), Istanbul (+11.4%), Paris ORY (+8.1%), London LGW (+7.8%) and Barcelona (+6.3%)
GROUP 2 Airports - Istanbul SAW (+39.6%), St Petersburg (+17.3%), Hamburg (+13.2%), Tel Aviv (12.1%) and Malaga (+10.5%)
GROUP 3 Airports - Kiev (+29.5%), Lanzarote ACE (+17.1%), Ankara ESB (+13.2%), Izmir (+11.9%) and Catania (+11.1%)
GROUP 4 Airports - Vatry (+76.0%), Bournemouth (+44.7%), Kaunas (+43.5%), Skopje (+36.5%) and Arad (+35.9%)
