Thirty one percent of respondents use organizations' membership discounts, such as AAA and AARP to reduce hotel costs. Using online services such as Priceline.com are used by 26% percent of respondents with hotel loyalty programs close behind at 25 percent.

Just under 15 percent rely on their employers for negotiated corporate rate.  Traveling during off peak times and using frequent flyer points for hotel rooms tied at eleven percent. Seven percent noted they look for last minute deals while 12 percent don't use any strategies at all to save on hotels.  Six percent checked they use all options listed that were listed in the survey.  

Write-in suggestions included using government discounts and discounted rates offered through convention sites.

"It appears savvy travelers are using a combination of tools to get the best deals," says John McCarthy, president, GO Airport Express.
