Key Travel Industry Executive And Bush-Appointee Carries Travel Industry Message To White House |
|
WASHINGTON, DC -- Travel Industry Association of America Board Member and past National Chair Marilyn Carlson Nelson, chairman and CEO of Carlson Companies, Inc. and Chairman of the Women’s Business Council appointed by President Bush, took the travel industry's urgent need for recovery to the White House on Friday. Carlson Nelson spoke with senior White House advisors personally on behalf of the travel and tourism industry. |
She asked them to include two measures in a possible economic stimulus package being considered by the President. Carlson Nelson also alerted the President’s advisors to the need for the creation of a public-private partnership to fund a national branded advertising and promotion campaign to market the United States as a destination to international travelers and reverse a 30 percent decline in U.S. share of world tourism since 1992.
The two measures will go a long way towards stimulating travel and help restore jobs and economic health to the travel and tourism industry. Designed to have an immediate and significant impact, each measure is structured to be short-term.
* A temporary travel tax credit for personal travel expenses that taxpayers can claim on their 2003 tax returns. Taxpayers must book and pay for qualified personal travel within a specified time frame in 2003.
* A temporary increase in the business meal and entertainment deductibility rate for 2003 together with a temporary amendment to the tax code that allows for the deduction of accompanying spouses on business trips during a specified time in 2003.
The U.S. travel and tourism industry continues to struggle in the aftermath of September 11 and the sluggish economy. Revenues have declined more than $36 billion in the past year and 345,000 Americans have lost their jobs. The industry encourages the inclusion of these two measures in an overall economic stimulus package in order to accelerate economic recovery and restore jobs.
TIA is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the $537 billion travel industry. TIA's mission is to represent the whole of the U.S. travel industry to promote and facilitate increased travel to and within the United States.
