  • External Source Hugh Crean bears the title of president and CEO of Seattle's Farecast.com. But evangelist in chief better fits him.

Ask Crean a question about the company he heads and he'll give an enthusiastic sermon about how Farecast's Web site helps travelers overwhelmed by the volume and diversity of airline scheduling and air travel and hotel pricing data on the Internet.

The young company, whose site went national just 17 months ago, searches direct airline and hotel sites, along with online travel agency sites such as Orbitz.com, for the best fares and rates, and it aggregates those results into one site.

Travel search leader Kayak.com does the same thing, but Crean touts Farecast's difference from its bigger competitor. Farecast uses its oceans of data and dozens of other factors to advise travelers whether that low fare is a bargain and should be bought now or whether it's better to wait for a lower price.

Crean calls what Farecast does 'building the bridge from complexity to simplicity.'
